SEPTEMBER 29, 2024, GOLD STAR MOTHER’S AND FAMILY DAY

DUTCHESS COUNTY LEGISLATURE Proclamation: September 29, 2024, Gold Star Mother's and Family Day Resolution No. 2024162 The Dutchess County Legislature offers the following and moves its adoption: WHEREAS, Gold Star Mother's and Family Day is for honoring families of those who have received The Gold Star. The award commemorates the tragic death of a military member who perished while in the line of duty and hopes to provide a level of comfort to the parents and families that are left behind, and WHEREAS, a gold star was first used during the First World War to recognize a family member who perished in the line of duty. Soon thereafter the practice of sewing a gold star over the blue star on the military service flag displayed by families was approved to signify a fallen solider, and WHEREAS, in 1936, Gold Star Mother's Day was declared by the United States Congress a holiday to be celebrated on the last Sunday in September and in 2011 the title of the day was amended to include families, and WHEREAS, the Dutchess County Legislature believes it is of the utmost importance to recognize those families whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, and WHEREAS, to help ease the grief of mothers and families, and recognizing that no one truly serves alone, the Dutchess County Legislature would like to recognize the many Gold Star families within the County and acknowledge their sacrifice in the service of others so that we may be free, now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, that the Dutchess County Legislature does hereby recognize September 29, 2024, as Gold Star Mother's and Family Day and with sincere regard, the legislature honors all those who have served and will continue to recognize Gold Star Mother's and Families each year in Dutchess County.
